In today’s English Drill for 12th grade Class 1, we reviewed students essays.  Only these students were from Kansas!  By connecting with his high school classmate, who has also become an English teacher in her native Kansas, Mr. Souther was able to do an “essay exchange” between Takeda students and students from the City of Hays , Kansas. Writing about what social issue was important to them, the students could find out what their counterparts on the other side of the world cared about. Some of the issues they had in common, like protecting the environment and minority rights, while others were very different. Popular topics for American students included gun rights, abortion, and the boarder wall with Mexico.

　This essay exchange was also a good opportunity for Takeda students to experience “academic” writing, as many of the Kansas students are preparing for their college entrance exams.

　“I really enjoy connecting my students with other students from around the world, especially from my native Kansas. It’s fresh and hopefully interesting for the students on both sides.” （Mr. Souther)

　今日の高校3年1組の英語演習の授業で，高校生のエッセイの書評をしました。アメリカカンザス州の高校生が書いたものです。サウザー先生は高校の同級生で現地の高校の先生をしている旧友と連携して，武田高校の生徒とカンザス州ヘイズ市の高校生との間でエッセイの交換をすることができました。社会問題についてレポートを書くことはカンザスの生徒たちにとって大切な勉強で，武田の生徒たちは地球の裏側にいる交換相手の生徒たちが何を問題視しているかを知ることができました。環境保護や社会的弱者の権利など，社会問題として共通理解しているものもあれば，全く異なるものもありました。アメリカの生徒たちが注目している話題の中には，アメリカの銃問題，妊娠中絶やメキシコとの国境問題が含まれていました。

　このカンザスの高校生の多くは大学入試の準備としてエッセイに取り組んでいるので，このエッセイ交換は武田の生徒たちにとって，「学究的な」作文とはどういうものかを経験する良い機会にもなりました。

　サウザー先生談：「武田の生徒たちと世界中の生徒たちを結びつけることは本当に楽しいことで，特に私の生まれ故郷のカンザスの生徒たちとの連携は素晴らしいものです。これは双方の生徒たちにとって新鮮で，願わくば楽しいものでありますように。」
