On Friday, November the 1st, we held the first Takeda High School 1st grade Recitation Contest. All 1st graders participated in preliminary rounds in their classes, and the top students advanced to the contest held in the gymnasium, complete with decorations and guest judges.
All three selections were represented in the top three contestants, Tabata Tatsuya (1-2) who did Steve Jobs speech, “You’ve got to find what you love,” Okada Nanako (1-2), who did the coaches speech from the movie “Friday Night Lights” about “being perfect, and Morihara Takahiro (1-1), who did the selection from the movie “Ratatouille” (Remi’s Oishii Restaurant in Japanese), respectively. The top three, as well as all of Friday’s constants received prizes, but the biggest prize was the confidence gained by the students and teachers from such a high level contest.
“I was surprised at the high level of skill with which the students spoke. It was obvious that they had prepared well,” said special guest judge Reuben Lewis, a Hiroshima University student from Sierra Leone studying peace building.
Takeda teacher, Ashley Souther, praised the students for more than just their English: “The message of each the speeches – don’t settle, do everything that you can, thinking about others, are very important. I felt the students really understood these messages from the way they spoke from the heart.”
All in all, the contest was a great success , but we must work harder to make next year’s even better. Because as Steve Jobs says, “don’t settle!”
11月1日（金）に高校1年生による第1回武田レシテーションコンテストを開催しました。高校1年生全員が各クラスで予選に参加し，上位12名の生徒が特別審査員を招き，デコレーションされた体育館で開催された本選のコンテストに進みました。上位入賞の3人 －1年2組の田畑達也君がスティーブ・ジョブズのスピーチ「You’ve got to find what you love」を，1年2組の岡田奈々子さんがアメリカTVドラマ「Friday Night Lights (邦題 プライド 栄光への絆）」のアメリカンフットボールコーチのスピーチを，そして1年1組の森原崇弘君が「Ratatouill（邦題 レミーのおいしいレストラン）」からの引用文を－ が３つの題材をそれぞれ披露しました。受賞した3名のみならず，一番大きな収穫はこのようなハイレベルなコンテストを通じて生徒と教員が得た自信だと思います。
特別審査員のルーベン・ルイスさん（現在広島大学で平和構築を学んでいるアフリカ・シエラレオネからの留学生）は，「生徒たちの話す技能のレベルの高さにはとても驚きました。きっとしっかり準備してきたのでしょうね。」と感想を述べていました。
英語科のサウザー先生は生徒の英語力を賞賛するだけでなく，「スピーチの中のメッセージにある”現状に満足するな！できることは何でもやれ！ 他人のことを考えろ！” はとても大切なことです。 生徒たちの心こもったスピーチから，彼らはこのことを本当に理解していると感じました。」と締めくくりました。
全体としてコンテストは大成功でしたが，来年のコンテストをよりよいものにするために私たちは努力を重ねなければなりません。なぜなら，スティーブ・ジョブズが言うように，「現状に満足するな！」だからです。
